Russian-made AL-31FN High Thrust Aeroengine

According to a recent article on the website of Russian Airport, although China claims that the J -10 is a new generation fighter developed entirely by domestic engineers, it will be inseparable from the powerful power given by Russian-made engines for a long time from its birth to the future.

At first, China had planned to equip the J -10 with the domestic WP-15 engine, but with the cessation of the development of the latter, China had to start looking for a "foreign heart" for the new machine overseas. As the Russian-made Su -27 and Su -30 equipped by the People’s Liberation Army are equipped with AL-31 series engines and show good performance, China finally chose AL-31F as the standard engine of the J -10.

However, there are still some differences between the AL-31F equipped with the J -10 and the same type of engine equipped with Russian fighters, so it was named AL-31FN.

The development of AL-31FN was completed in 2000. During your stay in 2002-2004, the Russian Salute Company delivered a total of 54 AL-31FN engines to China at a unit price of 3 million US dollars. At that time, the two sides also held talks on the establishment of a maintenance factory for this type of engine in China.

In July 2005, Russian Defense Products Export Corporation signed a contract with China to supply another 100 AL-31FN engines within three years (China has the right to buy another 150 engines before 2010), with a total value of 300 million US dollars. In addition, the two sides are still discussing the possibility of assembling this type of engine in China by Chinese enterprises according to the license.
